GENE INTERACTION PERTAINING TO
COAT COLORS
PAPILLONS AND PHALENES
All of the alleles affect color by controlling the distribution and depth
of the two types of pigment. Distribution refers to the location and pattern
of the color on the coat and depth refers to the shade
of the color. The two pigments involved in the production of all the colors are
eumelanin which produces black/brown colored hairs and phaeomelanin which
varies in color from pale cream to red to dark mahogany.
