Some Papillons can have freckles on their coat known as ticking. The ticking spots are normally
small and circular in appearance.
Ticking is not present at birth; it usually emerges during a puppy’s first molt (approximately at 4 months of age).
Also, ticking tends to be more prevalent on the Papillon’s front legs and/or muzzle where the hairs are shorter.
Ticking on longer hairs may not be as pronounced as on shorter hairs, and it may even be unnoticeable on a dry coat.
The amount of ticking varies from one Papillon to the next. Some Papillons only have a few tick marks on their nose
or front feet while others have a lot of ticking all over their coats.
The color of ticking can be any color that
the Papillon is. For example, w/black and w/tricolor dogs will have black ticking (tricolors can also have gold ticking
on their legs). Sables and reds will have red colored ticking. aLivers will have brown colored ticking
