COAT COLOR TOUR
PAPILLONS AND PHALENES

INTRODUCTION:

Hello, the following pages describe the various Papillon coat colors and provide picture examples of each color. All of the photographs used throughout this website are used with permission from the respective photographer, editor, or both. Please do not use any image, or its likeness, in whole or in part.

Before you begin the color tour, it's important to familiarize yourself with some terms.

All the coat colors are produced by the action and interaction of only two pigments. These two pigments are eumelanin and phaeomelanin.
Eumelanin: a pigment that produces black hair
Pheomelanin: a pigment that produces all the various shades of red hair
Red: any shade of color produced by pheomelanin. Shades range from pale blonde to bright red to deep mahogany.
Unless otherwise noted, we will use the term red throughout the color site so that we do not have to repeat all the possible shades that can be produced by pheomelanin.

Color: refers to any color other than white (hairs with color are pigmented whereas white hairs lack pigment)
Colorless: hairs that are white (lack eumelanin/phaeomelanin pigment)

Coat: all areas of the body that have hair
Body: all parts of the dog, except the head; includes the neck, torso, legs, and tail but does NOT include the head
Head: refers to the head only; does NOT include the (body) neck, torso, legs, and tail

Leather: eye rims, nose, lips, and pads
